In recognition of the enthusiastic efforts and the impressive progress shown by the students of the Penrith Community Filipino School (PCFS), the School staff and teachers headed by Principal Marie Bandayrel staged a Merit Awards Day on the 19th of December 2009 at the school site, St. Marys Senior Citizens Centre, St. Marys NSW.


Giselle Galam (secondary class) and Ashley Boughton (primary class) were recognised for their outstanding achievements in the learning of the Filipino language. All students were commendable for their active involvement in community events throughout the year. They performed choral songs and dances of Philippine heritage. They acted as young ambassadors of Philippine culture in the City of Penrith.

His Worship the Mayor of the City of Penrith Cr. Kevin Crameri, Hon. David Bradbury MP and Assistant Consul Raymond Salvana graced the occasion. Multiculturalism, establishing connection with one’s heritage and cultural literacy were emphasised in their speeches .

The students sang the traditional Christmas song “Pasko Na Naman” under the musical tutelage of their choir teacher Loy Tagudin and piano accompanist Elijah Tagudin . The musical solo performances of secondary class student Isabelle Polines and primary class student Catherine Gill were additional highlights of the entertainment.

The Penrith Community Filipino School will continue to provide opportunities for these young Filipino-Australians in the learning of the Filipino language and knowing their Philippine heritage.
